Herb advocates for ecotourism, trails and bicycling. He was recently named "Vision" honoree for 2014-2015 by Florida Bicycle Association/Bike Florida. He helped revitalize the Port of Miami, served as executive director of the Caribbean Travel Association and initiated the Caribbean Tourism Research Center – today’s Caribbean Tourism Organization -- in Barbados. His credits include the Miami-Bahamas Goombay Festival, Great Florida Birding Trail, and the modern-day Florida bicycling and Florida bed-&-breakfast movements, He is author of three books and many articles about alternative tourism. He is a former director of American Youth Hostels, of the Florida Humanities Council, the Florida Greenways & Trails Foundation, and the St. Johns River Alliance.
